How core balance current transformer works

A core-balance current transformer (CBCT) is a type of current transformer designed to measure the current flowing in a power system. Its primary function is to provide a current signal that is proportional to the primary current passing through the conductors enclosed by the CBCT. Here's a basic explanation of how a core-balance current transformer works:

      Core Design:

  • The CBCT consists of a toroidal (ring-shaped) magnetic core made of a highly permeable material, such as iron or a ferrite compound.
  • The core has a primary winding, which is typically placed around the entire circumference of the core and encircles the conductors carrying the primary current.

     Primary Current:

  • The primary current, which is the current to be measured, passes through the conductors enclosed by the CBCT.
  • The primary winding on the CBCT is connected in series with the primary conductors.

Magnetic Flux Induction:

  • When the primary current flows through the conductors, it induces a magnetic flux in the core due to electromagnetic induction principles.
  • The core ensures that most of the magnetic flux generated by the primary current is confined within it.

Secondary Winding:

  • The CBCT has a secondary winding, which is usually connected to the measuring instrument or protective relays.
  • The secondary winding is wound on the same core but is electrically isolated from the primary winding.

Current Transformation:

  • The magnetic flux induced by the primary current also links with the secondary winding, causing an electromotive force (EMF) to be induced in the secondary winding.
  • This induced voltage in the secondary winding is proportional to the primary current and is used as a representation of the primary current.

Isolation and Measurement:

  • The secondary winding provides electrical isolation between the primary current and the measuring instrument.
  • The secondary current is then used for measurement, monitoring, or protection purposes.

Core-Balance Principle:

  • The term "core-balance" comes from the fact that the CBCT is designed to maintain a balance between the magnetic flux induced by the primary current and the secondary winding.
  • This design allows the CBCT to be sensitive to the vector sum of the currents passing through the conductors within the core, making it particularly useful for ground fault detection.

In summary, a core-balance current transformer is a vital component in power systems for accurate and isolated measurement of current, especially in applications where ground fault detection is essential.
